Palliative care, also known as End of Life care, is one of the most rewarding times to care for an individual. Although it is heart breaking to know that they are going to pass away, it is amazing to know that because of you, they can do that in their own home. Being at home means they are in familiar surrounds with friends and family members by their side. With most palliative care packages, care workers would be going in at least four times a day to see the service user. When doing this, you become a big part of their daily routine. You become the kind face that makes them feel better after a bad day or night, you become the person who will listen to their hopes and fears. You become more than just a care worker, you become their trusted friend.
Care For The Whole Family
Although you are there to care for your service user, you are always checking how the family members are doing too. Making sure they are happy with the care their loved one is receiving, that they know who to call in an emergency or even that they are looking after themselves as well as their loved one. You become someone they can talk too, or ask questions if they feel a little overwhelmed by all the changes, especially all the new equipment that is sometimes needed. You are there with a listening ear for the family members who need a little cry when it all gets too much, you are even there with a pat on the head for the family dog who doesn’t understand why his owner cannot walk him like they used too.
Continuity Of Care Workers
Continuity of care workers is so important to us here at Personalized Homecare. By keeping continuity of care workers, the service user and family members feel confident with the care they receive as they know who will be coming on each visit. This allows them to get to know the people looking after them rather than meeting a new carer every visit. It also means that the care workers would be quick to notice any changes with the service user, like sudden weight loss, as they are with the individual every day. This would help us to be able to keep on top of things and get other professionals involved as and when we needed too.
